Good article that explains how we got here politically. He sees it more as a systematic versus communal orientation. Those who promote a systemic approach tend to be the more educated and see how various aspects of systems work together based on reasoned justifications. But most voters are not that educated and therefore see it as alien to their more direct, concrete lives, hence see them as elites that are divorced from their reality.
Those who process more communally are the less informed that identify with their in-group. They build strong bonds within their groups. They see all that rational analysis as irrelevant elitism that wants to control their lives. They feel their concerns are being ignored, that the system is rigged against them, which is true. But just laying our elite systemic rationality on them is just seen as more of the same control bullshit. Unfortunately, without that rational approach their communalism is prone to all sorts of lies and control by people that manipulate their naivety.
The author's solution is what he calls the fluid mode here, here and here.
