Damasio on consciousness

Continuing this post, there is a preview of his new book at Google Books. Chapter 9 on consciousness asserts that it requires that we be alert, have subjective images that combine with feelings, and be able to mentally integrate experience. This integrative consciousness is not in any specific brain area, instead coordinating various brain areas with the body more like a distributed network.
