The Un-American dream

Twampler has turned the American dream into a Russian nightmare according to conservative David Brooks. The American myth of leading the world toward democracy and freedom has been turned into one of  the pure rural folk, real Americans, that have been abused by those damned city liberals. The latter are not part of this pure America and must be eliminated along with all those other 'foreign' influences like Islam or Mexicans. No longer are we the land of opportunity for all, just what Twampler considers true, walled-in Americans united by this hateful purity. Brooks is right to equate this with Russian authoritarianism. He was too timid though, as many are, to extend it to Nazi Germany, an apt comparison.
