And when most of us can't live up to this ridiculous ideal of complete self-sufficiency we beat ourselves up. Then in an attempt to regain that feeling of personal power we buy a gun. We also fall prey to hateful rhetoric that tells us who took that power away from us, someone different from us, typically of a different race or national origin. The consequences of this sick cycle are now obvious, the root being the dysfunctional cultural expectation of the almighty individual.
