Dark side of conservatism or just who they are?

Lakoff asks: "Has the dark side of American conservatism taken over, as Boot suggests? Or has its true core simply been revealed for all to see?" Even given Lakoff's analysis at the link I still think there's a healthy versus sick version of the conservative worldview. It isn't fascistic per se; that's the sick part. Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower were never like that and promoted at least some progressive policies.
