Meaning not for profit. We will still pay for it through taxes but when run by the government it will cost less and eliminate the overhead and greed. As a nation we decided long ago that a primary education should be free because it created better citizens and workers. It added to society in that the return on investment through taxes was cost effective. But more importantly it made for a better participatory democracy, one of our original ideals.
Now the debate is about higher education and healthcare being free with the same rationale. Do we want a better society that takes care of each other or private companies that exploit us for their own greed, not giving a shit about society as a whole? It really comes down to that, even in the Democratic primary.
How can one support private insurance with the above reality? Or private education? Both should be a human right and administered by the government with our tax dollars for the greater good. Do we invest in all our people or just in the for profit industries?
