Of their recent film Planet of the Humans. They note that some environmental groups have sold out to Wall Street in effect green washing corporations. But the underlying dynamic causing the problem in the first place is constant growth: In the corporate bottom line, in population and in customer consumption.
It's dysfunctional corporate capitalism that must be addressed. And changed NOW. Private health insurance has abandoned millions who have lost their jobs because their insurance was tied to that job. If someone who contracts the virus and survives, they do so with a financial crisis awaiting them. People can't make their rent or buy food without a job. The government is making funds available in this dire time of need. We CAN make drastic changes when we need to. The pandemic has shown that the system is so broken that we NEED to drastically change it not only now but continue the changes after the pandemic as well.
The pandemic has proven the lie of the complaint that "we just can't be idealistic, that we need piecemeal, incremental change." It has been made crystal clear is that with the stay-at-home and quarantine measures we've seen drastic reduction in climate-causing pollution and some regeneration of environments. We can have rapid change when our lives depend on it. We now need to realize that with the climate crisis our lives depend on that too. And if we don't initiate urgent and necessary measures to address it we WILL end right back up in the same situation as this pandemic. And far sooner than we'd hope.
