The key is the strict father family dynamic typical of authoritarianism. Growing up in such families leads to transferring this dynamic to governing institutions, hence the 'strong leader' as savior. In this view there is a strong hierarchical organization: men above nature and women, God above man, the strong over the weak, etc. Some of the results of this view are racism and bigotry: blaming the poor for their plight, blaming immigrants for taking our jobs, blaming all Muslims for the acts of a few, blaming gays for destroying the strict father family structure, etc.
