Stephen Jay Gould is infamous for the expression non-overlapping magesteria, which means for example that science and religion have their own validation criteria and ne'er the twain shall meet. Ken Wilber has said something similar with his nonexclusion principle (excerpt B, 17). But as I suggested here:
"While each domain like spirituality or economics is a self-contained holon with its own autopoetic structure, nonetheless as the image above depicts holons also intersect with each other and share some spaces between."
This is supported by recent research in Maslow's system:
"The original hierarchy states that a lower level must be completely
satisfied and fulfilled before moving onto a higher pursuit. However,
today scholars prefer to think of these levels as continuously
overlapping each other. This means that the lower levels may take precedence back over the other levels at any point in time."
Alternative illustration as a dynamic hierarchy of needs with overlaps of different needs at the same time.
