Some liberals attack other liberals known as "social justice warriors"
for focusing on race, or more broadly identity politics. They're accused
of everything from censoring so-called free speech to claiming you're a
racist if you are proud of your white privilege. It supposedly divides
us by focusing on the injustices against those of color instead of
merrily proclaiming we are all of one big happy family of humanity. And
on and on.
A key point these self-defeating liberals miss is that the identity
politics of race wins elections. Conservatives have used it for
generations in what is know as the 'southern strategy,' defending poor
white trash by blaming minorities for taking all their just deserts away
from them due to those damned liberal policies of affirmative action
etc. And it worked quite well. Twitler is using the same tropes now
hoping for the same effect. By why isn't it working this time around?
The NYT reports
that it isn't working because of the social justice movement. The
protests about the continual killing of unarmed black men are working.
The protests to reform police departments are working. The protests for
economic justice are working. The protests about Twitler's hate-filled
rhetoric defending white nationalism and racist statues are working.
Focusing on identity politics and social justice is turning the tide
against Twitler and his Repugnantan enablers and for progressive
candidates and policies.
That some liberals continue to criticize this movement out of their own
privileged and misguided notions of intellectual purity and abstraction
divorced from political realities on the ground is tantamount to giving
aid and comfort to the enemies of the very ideals they profess to
support. If they want to win the upcoming elections they will realize
that identity politics will achieve those victories. The conservatives
have long know this but some liberals continue to shoot themselves in
the foot in the name of ideology, seemingly preferring to lose while
ironically keeping some sense of their own superior identity.
