Results of Finland's basic income trial

It increased happiness but not employment.  But that means paid employment, which often means shit jobs. Those happy people are likely employed in things they love doing regardless of pay. Given that many of the shit jobs will be obsolete soon due to AI, and the latter will generate a lot more money for governments than workers, then the government should give the unemployed the basic income as an investment in its citizens, which investment makes better citizens who are more active in democracy's requirement of well informed participants.
