This interview notes that about 25% of people are low information voters, meaning they don't follow politics that closely. They don't respond to the Parties or media much because they rightly think those outlets are biased and rigged. One reason they respond to Dump is that he made his pitch criticizing that system, and because he uses entertainment techniques like name calling and insults that capture their attention.
It's also why I choose to use similar techniques in my blog, because they work and capture the attention of this demographic, who are needed to win elections. All the highbrow analysis, which works with the informed high information voters, has no effect with these folks. To the contrary, per above they just tune it out. Pick your demographic(s) and use what's appropriate to get them to pay attention.
