Monbiot on neoliberalism

See his article here. He comments on the book What About Me? The Struggle for Identity in a Market-Based Society. We unconsciously accept this sort of society as a given without question, like in itself it is a reality and not a social construction. But it is indeed constructed by those with the power and money and rigs the rules so that it stays that way. To do so it reinforces that the winners deserve it and that those that don't succeed are losers deserving of scorn and what they (don't) get. It sells the idea that everyone can also succeed if they just work hard and play by the rules. But since the rules are rigged it's rare that anyone can succeed at this game. It sells competition and merit as hallmarks but again rigs the system so that there is no competition or deserving merit. It's a big lie to keep most of us down and to feel like it's our own fault. Fuck that.
